LT020: Mellow Grave ”Smoke Filled The Room, We Slept” CS

Aucklanders, Jordan Puryer and Adrian Bird formed Mellow Grave in early 2010 as an off-shoot of their band, 1995. They appear to have taken 1995’s more conventional Interpol / Joy Division rock and gone far underground. Well, six feet, at least. The vocals and guitars have slid into the ether and been hijacked by the ‘ghosts in the machine’, the glacial synths and hip-hop beats of what critics have dubbed Witch-House or Drag. But it would be unfair to tar Mellow Grave with the same brush as such Drag flag-bearers as SALEM.

Nonetheless, album openers, ‘Oxygen’ and ‘Melatonin’ suggest that Puryer and Bird are receiving less of either than is healthy. The industrial clatter of ‘Melatonin’ is especially crushing, but halfway through third track, ‘Amphibian’, the pace picks up - the beast literally drags itself out of the murk. An impression of Cold Cave, or a grim New Order fronted by Ian Curtis singing from the…er… grave… continues through ‘Burn One’, and there are even flashes of M83’s light in ‘Wood Grain’. ’Merk That’ is almost club-friendly, not a particularly friendly club perhaps, but I can imagine zombies throwing shapes in a dark, airless basement. Mellow Grave show us that they are capable of several shades of grey.

LT024: Strange Forces “Spores” CS

Their influences range from Spacerock to obscure New-Age Prophecies. It sounds like a black sanded beach below 20 suns. It’s mulitdimensional dark-surf, powered by Peyeote and driven by dark matter induced by their pineal gland. Strange Forces deliver a washed out Lo-Fi Psychedelic experience channeling organic and digital sounds from one swell to another. LIMITED TO 100 COPIES!

“Rattling, monstrous invocations of acid-rock breakdowns both mental and musical… Reverb soaked guitar flutters in the shadows of a tree lined clearing, shadows constantly profaned by the flames of some awful, ancient ritual at the clearing’s centre. Unimaginable colour shooting up into space from a cyclopean obelisk. The Old Ones would be proud.” —20jazzfunkgreats.co.uk

LT028: Fontän ”Winterhwila” CS

a Balearic kraut-disco odyssey. After a semi-ambient opening sequence on 'Backustugu' layering meandering electric guitar leads and softened up synth textures, along comes the more pronouncedly funked up '... You Too', which cruises along with Spandau Ballet basslines and slightly out of place slide guitar phrases, all set within a context of motorised discoid beats. Even better is 'Early Morning', whose dissolved vocals and rampant guitar soloing make for a classic case of something enormously cool arising from a convolution of several deeply uncool things. One for fans of cosmic-disco, prog and chart-bothering synth-funk alike, Winterhwila is a delight. -Boomkat

LT033: Blissed Out ”I” CS

Blissed Out hails from NYC, but his beats are as cold as the Arctic wastes. “ICE to meet you” they say as they march over your corpse. Somewhere between the grim chug of witched-out industrial, the ghetto gothery of hip-hop, and the paranoid highs of trance sits I, the latest EP from the young producer. It’s the perfect thing for your next Halloween rave; just be sure to have plenty of acid.

LT041: Mater Suspiria Vision ”Crack Witch 2” CS

The work of Mater Suspiria Vision is known to be a surreal and abstracted experience and Crack Witch 2 is no exception, but there’s a new dimension. Throughout, sung and spoken word vocals weave in and out of the dreamscape sounds. Vocals that add a more human presence amidst the sounds of encroaching terror and vocals that are part of this terror... This is a very full-bodied form of musical minimalism and delicious kind of dread.

LT042: COLD NAME ”NOT IN LOVE” CS

If Braindance and IDM were descriptions of the aims of that music. To appeal to the head, the intellect as well as the feet. Then there needs to be something else to describe dance music that is made entirely to exist within the mind. Something so personal that it would whither and shrink if experienced in a group.

Maybe this was the true calling of Braindance. Not as a catch-all for Aphex Twin’s (and Rephlex’s) output but an attempt at naming the next stage in the evolution of the clubber. The onanism of mind altering substances in a communal group giving way to a purely personal experience. A rejection of Ecstasy’s insidious oneness and an embracing of a personal connection with the music, to the exclusion of the world.

Cold Name’s ''Not In Love'' isn’t in some undanceable time signature. It’s not obtuse. It’s perfectly possible to dance to its techno. It just doesn’t seem to want you to.

Its drums envelop like a thick black ooze. Suspending you in an aural sensory deprivation chamber. Around you you hallucinate what it’d be like, being inside a bass bin at a mega-club. No, actually being the bin; at one with its wood and paper and rubber and plastic. Oscillating for the delight of the big room crowd singular in the knowledge of what you are and what you do. Divorced, in your distortions and pulsations, from everything else. As if all the bodies and the architecture were just a complex feedback chamber for your own personal enjoyment.

Inside your bass-bin-head you hear the words of Bob, and the occasional sound of fire being recorded in the red.

LT043: NIGHT TERROR ”NIGHT TERRORS” CS

Members of the experimental prog outfit Ga’an have been making a comeback recently: first, vocalist Lindsey Powell released a lovely track as Fielded, and now member Tyson Tortensen has a new project, Night Terror. But while Powell exchanged Ga’an’s darkly ritualistic feel for virtuoso pop, Tortensen picks up right where Ga’an left of.

...prog-textures and 80s horror soundtracks are melded and warped together into a haunting jam. Indeed, it appears to be something of an homage to John Carpenter’s 1988 cult classic, "They Live", complete with several samples of the film’s dialogue. But Night Terror takes Carpenter and heightens the darkness and intensity, coming out with something far more massive and chilling going from moody, atmospheric soundscapes to its climax of dark and pulsating synth arpeggios, terrifying and transcendent.
